Ukraine
Ukraine’s financial sector is dominated by banks and, after the recent credit boom, has a larger banking sector (relative to GDP) than peer countries. In Ukraine banks’ credit portfolios are outsized in relation to other transition economies in Europe and Eurasia. As measured by banking deposits to GDP, Ukraine lags behind CEE Northern and Southern Tier averages, but is well ahead of the average for Eurasia. These indicators illustrate that bank credit growth far outpaced deposit growth in the lead-up to the crisis.
