Georgia
In the core categories of credit, deposits and bank capital as a percentage of GDP, Georgia ranks well below peers. The fast paced growth in the years preceding 2008 in the commercial banking sector, which now accounts for 95 percent of total financial sector assets, reflected a consistent increase in the use of banking services by the private sector in response to reforms that inspired confidence.
Total outstanding bank loans have stagnated at about 34 percent of GDP since 2008. The banking sector is undersized even compared to the relatively backward Eurasia region.
